The seed stitch is a simple stitch pattern of alternating single crochet and double crochet stitches. The extended seed stitch is a variation that uses half double crochet (hdc) and treble crochet (tr) stitches instead. The pattern has a slightly more openwork design and works up more quickly than the traditional seed stitch but is still a great textured stitch for items such as scarves and washcloths.
Step One:
Crochet a starting chain. Any even numbered length will work. This example shows a starting chain of 20.
Step Two:
Hdc in 3rd st from hook.
Step Three:
Tr in next st.
Step Four:
Repeat steps two and three across row, alternating a hdc with a tr all the way to the end, ending with a tr.
Step Five:
Turn. Ch 2. Hdc, tr in first tr. Sk hdc. Hdc, tr in next tr. Repeat across row. Â There will be one stitch remaining at the end of the row, hdc in that last stitch.
Step Six:
Repeat step five to desired length of project.
