For this week’s exploration of crochet in couture and designer collections, let’s take a look at Marc Jacobs.
Fashion Designer Marc Jacobs
Fashion designer Marc Jacobs was born in New York in 1963 and is one of the youngest designers in Simone Werre’s book 50 Fashion Designers You Should Know. Hwe went to Parsons, graduating in 1984, and presented his own first collection two years later. He has worked with a number of big names, and since 1997 has been the chief designer at Louis Cuitton. In 2000 he launched his own brand name collection which is known for celebrating girliness in untraditional ways.
Marc Jacobs Fall 2012 Crochet
If you’re looking for crochet on the runway for Fall 2012, look no further than Marc Jacobs. He used sparkly novelty yarns, bright colors and oversized safety pins to create a funky look for his new crochet pieces:
See photos of the whole runway show at Vogue. Or here’s a video of the show:
By the way, the shawl with pin sells for $1800 through the Marc Jacobs website.

Crochet Inspired by Marc Jacobs
And did you know that Marc Jacobs inspired one of the pop culture designs in the crochet pattern book Pop Goes Crochet! by Vickie Howell?

Those shoes made me smile! The first dress was a little…out there although I love the idea of the giant safety pin.
@danidoesdoilies Yeah, the fall 2012 runway show was a little – extreme! But I also kind of love the giant safety pin idea. And I think the shawl is cute – it’s just that the whole thing put together is a bit much.
i think that arlene stimmel had it the best and norma minkowitz made it fine art
Cool crochet. But is the fur fake or faux? Do you know that?
@Rikke That’s a good question. It looks like faux fur to me but I don’t know for sure.
