Did you know that September 16th is Collect Rocks Day? (See other random September holidays here.) I actually did used to collect rocks when I was a kid. I loved to keep things organized in strange ways so I would use egg cartons and put one rock in each little egg spot and I would name the rocks, writing the names in a corresponding spot on the inside of the egg carton lid. I had a few precious rocks that I got when my mom would take us to the gem store but mostly I found rocks I liked in the yard and kept those. Some of them, I painted. If I had known how back then, I surely would have crocheted decorative cozies for some of them! In honor of that fun memory and the fact that today is Collect Rocks Day, I thought I’d share a roundup of crochet-covered stones and rocks, something I haven’t done since 2013 when I shared these 20 unique crochet rocks.
These crocheted rocks were part of an art exhibit by sculptor Marianne Lettieri that was at the Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame this past summer. The museum shares, “Artist Marianne Lettieri’s installation includes about 200 river rocks covered with crochet. Most of the doilies used for the coverings were found at local estate sales, a link to women’s handwork of the past. Others were created in collaboration with contemporary fiber artist, Stefanie Fayard. More were fashioned as recently as June 2015, when a group of women, ages 13 to 94, gathered in Menlo Park to crochet together.”
