Tips Before You Start

  1. Check your measurements: The foundation chain must be wide enough to pull over your hips. If your hips are wider than 42 inches, add chains in multiples of 4 until it fits comfortably.
  2. Yarn choice matters: Avoid heavy worsted weight acrylics for this project, as a maxi skirt uses a lot of yarn and can become uncomfortably heavy. DK weight ensures a beautiful, swishy movement.
  3. Adjusting length: To make the skirt shorter or longer, simply subtract or add plain double crochet rounds before you begin the final shell edging.

Drawstring

Row 1: 250 chains are made leaving a 6 inch tail on the beginning and end of the chain.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off and weave in all ends securely.
  2. Thread the drawstring through the ch-1 spaces of Rnd 4 (the Eyelet Round), going over and under the 3-dc groups.
  3. Knot the ends of the drawstring to prevent fraying.
  4. Block the skirt lightly to relax the stitches and enhance the drape.

Make It Your Own

  • Size adjustments: To make the skirt wider, add foundation chains in multiples of 4. For every 4 chains added, you will have one extra repeat in the eyelet round and one extra shell in the edging.
  • Color variations: This pattern looks stunning in wide, sweeping stripes or a subtle ombré yarn.
  • Add-ons: Thread wooden beads onto the ends of your drawstring before knotting for a boho touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the yarn requirement for the skirt?

For the medium size as written, you will need roughly 1,500 yards of DK-weight yarn. If you intend to lengthen the skirt, or are beginning with a wider foundation chain, be sure to get an additional skein.

What size crochet hook is the best to use?

This pattern uses a US H/8 (5.0 mm) hook. You may need to adjust your hook size to match the gauge of 14 stitches per 4 inches.

May I substitute with worsted-weight yarn instead?

You can, but it will change how the skirt drapes and how heavy the skirt will be. If you use worsted weight, you will have to recalculate your foundation chain based on your new gauge, and the finished skirt will be a lot heavier.

Is this pattern easy enough for beginners?

You can make this skirt if you know how to double crochet in the round and can do simple increases. Because the waist is a drawstring, you don’t have to worry about complicated fitting of the garment.
