One of the first books that I ever reviewed on this blog was Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies by Twinkie Chan. I was enchanted by the way she applied crochet ideas to making food-related art that was also wearable. I’ve followed her work ever since, always intrigued by what she’s creating whether it was her free patterns for Michael’s or her artistic imagery showcasing her creations. So, it’s no surprise that I’m in love with her new book, Twinkie Chan’s Crocheted Abode a la Mode, in which she has applied her crochet food-making talents to home decor.
Crochet For All Areas of the Home
Twinkie’s new crochet book features twenty yummy crochet patterns, five patterns for each of four areas of the home: Kitchen, Living Room, Bath and Home Office. Whether you want to add funky food flair to the area where you prep and eat meals or you want to add whimsy to the room where you do you work, Twinkie has an idea for you that is sure to make you smile.
Sweet and Savory Crochet Patterns
This crochet book is perfect for the crafty sweet tooth, with inspiration from retro candies, animal cookies, birthday treats and cherry pie. There are some savory selections as well, though, ranging from Warhol-inspired soup can magnets to retro TV dinner tablet cozies. Every crochet pattern in this book is easy to follow and accompanied by fabulous and fun photography that makes working on each project a treat.
Functional and Fun
These magnets are uniquely Twinkie but they remind me a bit of the work from artist Kate Jenkins
The idea behind these patterns is that you can create crochet that is super adorable but also functional at the same time. You can make amigurumi adorableness that “doesn’t just sit on a shelf looking precious, but actually becomes part of your everyday life”. You’ll find crochet patterns for plush pillows, office organizers, computer wrist resters, towel baskets, shower mitts, aprons and more.
Twinkie Says
“Crochet innately has a nostalgic, comfy, home-y feeling, and I hope to help you kick that crochet into cute with these twenty yummy projects!”
Each of the crochet patterns in this book has an introduction by Twinkie that shows off her personality. Some of these provide tips and ideas for the patterns, such as when she suggests that the Honey Bear apron could be embroidered with a “little message, like PURE HONEY, BEE SWEET, or QUEEN BEE”. Others just help you to feel closer to the designer, get a sense of her personality and let some of her fun and creative spirit rub off on your own work. This really adds to the book and makes it more than just a collection of great patterns but also a delightful read.
