Crocheted Pickles Baffle Me but Chaos Blankets Won Me Over

I've been looking at the latest crochet trends, and one that I don't understand is crocheted pickles. That's right, I said it. I just don't understand why people are crocheting pickles. To me, I guess I don't understand this trend.

As a grown woman, why would I need a crocheted pickle? I'm probably clueless and just don't understand. I get that it's whimsical, but why? I like pickles as much as the next person, but not enough to crochet one. I prefer the kind you eat.

Cute I Just Don't See It

I haven't tried crocheting a pickle, so maybe I haven't given it a fair shot. But there is no part of me that thinks a pickle is cute. Tasty, yes, but not cute. I just don't understand.

The Chaos Blanket That Won Me Over

The trend I almost dismissed is the crochet chaos blanket. Sometimes I'm slow to jump on the bandwagon. I don't want to be just like everybody else; I want to be different. But I was watching TikTok videos and seeing all of the chaos blankets and how pretty they were turning out, so I had to join the trend.

If you're not familiar with the chaos blanket, you choose some colors, and you have rows 1 through 6. You pick a variety of stitches, and if you're like me, I put mine into an online spinner. Each day, my coworker, who is doing the crochet along with me, and I spin it. And it tells us which stitch, what color, and how many rows. You do this until you have a blanket, so it's totally random. It could turn out ugly or pretty.

At first I thought, "I don't like not being in control of what colors and what stitches." But I am really enjoying this. It's a nice variety, always changing colors, stitches, and number of rows. It keeps my interest. I'm finding that I like projects like this where there are a lot of changes and different colors and stitches to keep my interest.

Granny Squares Are My Forever Project

I love crochet granny squares. I guess if I had one thing that I could crochet for the rest of my life, it would be granny squares. Again, they come in a variety of colors and are quick and easy to do. I am currently working on the Hygge Burst Blanket, and I'm crocheting squares for that.

I like to crochet granny squares if I need something mindless to crochet. For example, on a road trip, I'll crochet some and put them in a decorative jar until I'm ready to sew them together. I've made pillows, lampshade covers, bunting- all kinds of things with granny squares; they're so versatile and colorful.

Rescuing Doilies From The Goodwill Bin

One thing I wish was more popular than it is… Doilies and lacy crochet pieces. I think it is an art, and they are beautiful. I love the vintage look, and I wish they would come back into popularity. But I still think there are many uses for them. I've made doilies from time to time; I've used some as wall hangings, and I've used some on my furniture just to dress up a table or a centerpiece.

I always joke that I was born in the wrong decade because I love vintage things like that. I'm always rescuing doilies from Goodwill or a thrift store to give them a new life. I think about the people that put all of that work into them, and I try to rescue them so they are appreciated.

I recently found a beautiful tablecloth at Goodwill and paid five dollars for it. Someone had spent so much time crocheting each little round motif, and it made me sad that it ended up at Goodwill, but rest assured, it has a good home now.

Never Say Never To A Crocheted Pickle

I like to stay up with the times and crochet things that are popular and trending, but that's not the main reason why I choose a pattern. I like to make things that bring ME joy and make ME happy.

Whether they're trending or not, I will always make granny squares, and who knows? Maybe someday I might make a pickle… You just never know.
