Tamara Kelly of the blog Moogly has long been one of my favorite crochet designers, so it is no surprise that I’m a fan of her new book titled Quick Crochet for the Home: 20 Fast Projects to Liven Up Every Room.
Crochet Makes a House a Home
The Perfect Pouf is a bulky crochet cover that goes over an inflatable pouf
In the intro to this book, Tamara notes that how much that crochet in TV shows and movies is common, especially blankets shown on a couch, and says “that’s because crochet is the touch that makes a house a home”. This crochet book is a collection of patterns designed for each room in the house (although many are suitable for more than one room) – patterns that work up quickly so that you can swiftly and easily add a sense of personal touch to any home. These are great for your home, of course, but they can also be something you use to give a sense of home to hotels and other homes-away-from-home … and of course they make great gifts for the homes of others.
Crochet For Every Room in the Home
The Around The Table Trivet is a double-stranded cotton trivet that uses a unique combination of joined and unjoined rounds to create a seamless circle.
There are six sections in this book with three patterns each for the kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom and children’s room and another five patterns for the living room, which is the most common room in the house for people to enjoy crochet. Of course, many of the patterns can be used throughout the home – the coasters in the living room section can be used in kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms and even outdoor seating areas, the rugs for the bathroom and kitchen could be interchanged or used in other spaces as well, and you’ll find crochet blanket and pillow patterns in several sections of the book that also work in many rooms of the home.
About This Crochet Book Design
My favorite project in the book are the Smart As a Fox Bookends, which add cozy crochet to basic metal bookends and then use amigurumi techniques to create the fun animal body and tail.
Tamara Kelly is one of my favorite crochet designers not just because she has fun, cute designs but also because she explains her patterns really clearly. Her blog is well known for offering tutorials that include written instructions as well as video tutorials for both left and right handed crafters. She also has experience as a Craftsy instructor, in which she demonstrates her ability to anticipate what issues students might have and solve them before they arise. Tamara brings this same attention to detail to her book. Each crochet pattern includes helpful notes in the sidebar (such as “front and back are the same”, a project description that might include ideas for adjusting the project, finishing instructions, written instructions, symbol charts, a bonus tip, directions for any special stitches and clear photos. An additional glossary can be found at the end of the book with reminders on how to work basic stitches.
