Next up in my series on designer crochet is the fashion due Dolce & Gabbana. Before I even get started I know that I’m going to find crochet here since their crochet bags are currently popular with celebrities. Let’s see what else they’ve got for us

About Fashion Designers Dolce & Gabbana

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana debuted their first collection together in 1986. Ever since this brand has been known for dramatic, sexy clothing inspired by Italy. Corset dresses and leopard print coats are among the items that they’ve gotten attention for. What they do right is presenting clothing that a woman can wear and feel powerfully sexy but not at all smutty. Crochet seems right up their alley since its lacy peek-a-boo nature lends itself well to sex appeal. Let’s see what they’ve got for us …

Dolce and Gabbana crochet handbags have been a hit lately. Here’s Kylie Minogue wearing one that costs more than $1300.

Think that last bag was pricey? This designer crochet bag by D&G was priced at almost $2900.

It’s tough to do a corset in crochet but it could be inspiration for a cute top.

Note: sometimes I get it wrong, calling an item crochet when it’s not (read more here) and I always encourage my readers to let me know when they think an item I’ve said is crochet might not be. That way the blog can have the right information. Regardless, know that I always intend the designs to serve as inspiration for crocheters whether or not they’re truly crochet!

I did a little more research on etsy on crochet purses. I found one by the person whose store is called instincts. She is from Amsterdam. I loved the way she put a lining and zipper in her purses. I got some yarn today and I started one. It is just a veriagated yarn available here locally in Israel Cheap stuf) Ha Ha.  I love the colors so I decided to give it a go. So I won't be changing colors but I will do the sides and bottom in a solid. It wont be as great as our designer purse but it will be a fun project.

I also love to go to thrift stores. I also look for purses with a good structure and handles. I do rug hooking too and I found such a purse and was able to take it a part and insert my hooking add sides to match and put it back together with the original purse  inside which gave nice pickets and zippers .  I think the purse may have cost $2.00. Now that's what I'm talking about.  Ha Ha Maybe we could issue a challenge for crochet to do something like this inspired by the lovely designer purses. Then everyone could share what they did and we could all learn from it.

I have some up with an idea to have a finely crafted bag that would be close to the designer finish by using the base purse to one  of those Miche Bags. Have you seen them where you change the top part and it uses magnets to attach to the bag inners. It has a nice handle. I am in Israel now till May 18 I have a bag like that at home. I'm going to check and see if it would work. I found that great granny purse online in a few places. It was strange the really colorful one was a lot more than the duller one. It looked like the same bag to me. I found it on a few web sites as I was trying to see more details. I don't think I could even find one of those in Boise Idaho. Our purse budgets don't get that fancy there. I love your blog.

I think the designers appreciate fine crafted objects. i think we as crocheters need to look at what they are doing because they are really taking our art to another level. The handles and construction on those purses is fabulous. I think we need to learn from it. Oh to hold one of those purses in our hands and see how it is constructed and the fine work done. Maybe one of us who lives in a big city can go to a store and see one and maybe sneak a few pictures for us to see. maybe someone needs to plan a tour to Italy and meet up with some of these fabulous crocheters who could teach us.

@CheryllBaberSalzberg Great ideas. I actually could probably see some of these things in the stores here. I almost never go into the name brand stores (I'm a thrifter kind of gal) but it would be worth a tour to see what I can find and photograph for the blog.

How about we invite the designer to come to the US and bring the lovely hardware and handles and teach us the pattern. i just love it. In exchange we could do something nice for him. I'm not sure what. Now wouldn't that be a dream class? Or how about inviting him to a big crochet event and talk about his work. He could also teach a class on his techniques of finishing . A great dream.

@CheryllBaberSalzberg I would love to get some insight from these big designers into their choices to use crochet in their lines. It's not common - usually only one or two pieces per season if that - so there's got to be some thought behind it.
