Top 5 Crochet Records to Break: Hooked on Success

Ever been curious about what Crochet World Records have been set?  Check out these top five most exciting world records and challenge yourself to beat one – if you dare!

Longest Crochet Chain Made While Running

Breaking her own record she set in 2010, Susie Hewer set a new record of 457.35 ft of chain crocheted while running a marathon.

This averages 5.7 meters being chained per mile of her run, which she completed in 5 hours and 40 minutes. Impressive!

Longest Crochet Chain Overall

Hewer’s feat is definitely impressive but her marathon-based crochet chain is miniature compared to the longest ever hand-crocheted chain.

That record goes to Anne Vanier-Drussel who made the Guinness World Records for it in 2008 with a chain that’s eighty miles in length.

World’s Fastest Crocheter

This is one of the most competitive titles I know of in the world of record-breaking crochet. It’s currently held by Lisa Gentry, who crocheted 5,113 stitches in 30 minutes in 2005.

How many stitches can you make in half an hour? Dare you to try it!

Most Crocheters in One Place

Coming in hot at the beginning of this year, 2023, close to 1,000 crocheters came together to set a new record for the most crocheters working together in one place.

The 960 hookers gathered at Derby Arena in Derby, UK, and crocheted together for a consecutive 15 minutes to set this record.  With participants from across the globe, this was quite a feat!

Largest Crochet Blanket

The world’s largest crochet blanket was created by 1,500 inmates across 30 different correctional centers across South Africa.

The blanket, measuring 185,016 ft, was assembled at the Drakenstein Correctional Centre which is where Nelson Mandela lived before being released. The project was organized by the Nelson Mandala Foundation.

If you were going to try to break one of these records, which one would you go for?

  1. I am attempting to beat the world record of biggest Afghan crocheted by a single person
I have started it and am going forward the record.
It will probably take 1250 100g skeins of yarn and over 4000 hours to complete
Will let you know how I progress
It is a goal of mine to complete this
I just made an afghan- Pillow quilt 12ft by 12ft
2 granny squares crocheted together and then a pillow filled with feathers and a keepsake heirloom piece of something someone gave me
Jewellery, things made by my family and friends or memories I kept
Then I the pillows together and put them inside the granny squares I crocheted together then I crocheted the granny squares together in lines and then crocheted the lines together to make a great big blanket
Don’t know if you have a category for that or not most I’ve heard from have not heard of anything like that being done before
There are over 500 items inside the pillows in the blanket
Let me know if there is a category for that
    Thanks
