IK mentioned yesterday that for 2013 I’m doing a new series related to Crochet History. Het heet 50 Jaar van de haak geschiedenis.
Crochet History Series
For this new crochet history series I’ll do one post per week focusing on a year in history and finding out all that I can about crochet news, information and publications in that particular year. I’ll start next week with 1930 and the series will run weekly through year’s end wrapping up in 1980.
Why These Years?
I chose a fifty year span to make a good weekly series. I originally was going to do the first fifty years of the 20th century and then do the second half of the century in 2014. However I expect that there may not be a lot of news available in the early part of the century (although people were definitely crocheting) and I didn’t want the first weeks of the project to be boring for my readers. I decided to jump ahead.
I chose to jump to 1930 because this gives a nice span of crochet history since there were a lot of changes in the craft thanks to Depression Era, oorlogstijd haak, post-war crafting, and the craft’s surge in popularity in the 60s and 70s. I think this slice of crochet life will give us all a nice overview of how crochet changed throughout the 20th century.
What to Expect
I’ll be starting this series next week and looking at crochet in the year 1930. I’ll look into any available news from that time, try to find out what types of patterns people were following, see if any crochet books were published, enz. I’ll try to be thorough in providing you with information about what it was like to be a crocheter in this year!
