Over the weekend I saw this crochet for charity call in the Ventura County Star:

VENTURA COUNTY — The Moorpark American Legion Auxiliary and the Moorpark Women’s Fortnightly Club are seeking volunteers to help crochet helmet liners for troops who have been deployed to Afghanistan. The group is hoping to adopt a 600-member platoon from Point Mugu or Point Hueneme. The yarn must be 100 percent soft wool. For those who knit and cannot afford the yarn, it will be provided. Cash donations are also needed for the purchase of materials. Color must be specific; for details contact Faye Beaver, president, American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 502 and MFWC, Veterans Chairman at [email protected].

The little request intrigued me because I’ve never heard of the idea of crocheting helmet liners for soldiers before. Has anyone else ever heard of anything like this?
