Colorful Crochet Artist Babukatorium

babukatorium

Today’s crochet artist profile is of Babukatorium. I came across her work after seeing her crochet curtain (above) on a blog recently. (My apologies – I am usually super good at saving the info about which blog I get stuff from so that I can link back appropriately but for some reason I spaced on this one. I think I thought I saved it on Pinterest and then didn’t.) When I followed the link through to her Flickr account, I learned that she’d put this up in between various other art installations and activities and I found myself clicking here and there to learn more about her rainbow-inspired word. I hope you enjoy her beautiful crochet as much as I do!

More about crochet artist Babukatorium

There isn’t a lot of information about Babukatorium around the web. She mentions on her Flickr that she doesn’t like to talk a lot about her art and instead likes to let the art speak for itself. I can respect that. I do know from her Etsy that she’s based in Hungary / Italy. And I can tell from her work that she must have a love of color and a lot of patience!

Examples of Babukatorium’s crochet art

Some of Babukatorium’s art is in line with the whole yarnbombing movement. Like here are those same style of rainbow spiderwebs from the curtain above covering a lamp in a public space:

And here are similar spiderwebs crocheted onto a tree and added to with the fun placement of a crochet amigurumi bear.

You can see the artist at work here. Note not only the cool glow in the dark flowers that she’s putting onto the tree but also her own rainbow hair!

Babukatorium also makes a lot of really beautiful wearable pieces, like this colorful top that is made from 100% Italian cotton. Of course, it’s beautiful but it’s hard to even pay attention to it at first because the granny parasol is also amazing.

And here’s the back of a stunning Fire Flower Mandala Crochet Waistcoast that she created by modifying a design that she’d liked from someone else. This one can currently be found in Babukatorium’s Etsy store.

Another useful but still artistic item that you can find in the Etsy store is this super stunning hexagon blanket:

Why I love this crochet art

The color!

“From clothing to hats, beach blankets to umbrellas, hair pieces to rugs… all of babukatorium’s work is bursting with a vibrant life and a contagious spirit.” – LetsColourProject

I love the fact that so much of her work is inspired by the colors of the rainbow. It’s happy and fun and light and I think that’s a great contrast to the more serious art that’s often featured out there in the world. Additionally, I don’t always find it easy to work with a lot of bright colors in my own crochet so I really value when people do it and do it well!

  1. Wow I love all the color too! I used to be really into rainbows but I grew too shy to continue using them when I was a teen. I absolutely LOVE the parasol! I now want a parasol.
