I never get tired of seeing designer crochet hit the runways. I like seeing the way crochet is used in seasonal fashion trends. I like seeing the bits of handwork in what is sometimes mass produced fashion. I love seeing how craft informs fashion and fashion turns around and informs craft. Here are some of the bits of crochet spotted on recent runways for Fall 2017. These are from the pre-fall and menswear collections; another post next month will showcase the Fall 2017 Fashion Week collections from New York, London, Paris …
J.W. Anderson Menswear
The most talked-about crochet on the runway has been the granny squares showcased in the Fall 2017 mens’ collection by J.W. Anderson. See the whole collection on Vogue. Here are some of my favorites:
I love the asymmetry here with one sleeve in classic granny squares and the other in a different type of motif. Unique idea!
My very favorite use of the granny squares throughout this collection was when they were used on the hems of pant legs. I think it’s a nice nod to the craft that people could implement on solid pants. I also like the extra patchwork patches here.
This one has great neutral granny sleeves that remind me a bit of Christopher Kane’s crochet work from a few years ago. But what I really like are those extra patches of original crochet in designs that go beyond granny squares.
Okay, I don’t know about whatever is going on with the shoes here but I love that granny square choker idea!
This is a whole lot of look! I love that bag.
There was just a little bit of knitwear in the McQueen Resort 2017 collection including one great freeform crochet dress:
Knit or Crochet?
The Valentino Pre-Fall 2017 show included a few knit pieces that looked like they might have crochet details on them:
Likewise with some of the pieces in Vivienne Westwood’s 2017 Fall Menswear collection:

Granny Square Inspiration
Other Fiber Craft Inspiration
These shows didn’t have crochet per se but there were some beautiful inspirations from weaving and macrame that I just had to share:
Delpozo Pre-Fall 2017 has sweaters that remind me of weavings I adore
Veronique Branquiho Pre-Fall 2017 included embroidery and tassels as well as one shawl that looks like loom work with perhaps crochet chains
Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2017 also had lots of embroidery and tassels and one crochet-look knit poncho with fringe
There were some woven scarves and appliqués in the Walter Van Bierendonck Fall 2017 Menswear collection
