crochet clothing for babies

I really enjoyed making some crochet items for a friend’s baby girl recently, playing with different colors and sizes, hoping that she’ll be able to fit in some of the items now and grow into others.

The blue and grey dresses are both made using the a-line crochet dress free pattern by Bella Bambina Knits. I changed the bottom of the grey dress by adding a hyperbolic-style ruffle.

I used the first seven rows of that same crochet pattern (the part before joining rows into rounds) to make the baby cardi shrugs.

I made three – one in black, one in cream (which I finished with a row of single crochet at the bottom), and one in blue (which I finished with a row of picots at the bottom).

The largest of the dresses here is a variation on the Baby Delight Dress free crochet pattern from Hooked by Anna.

And the pastel dress, made in Unforgettable Boutique yarn, uses the dress portion of the free baby girl sleeper set crochet pattern by Abigail Goss.

v stitch crochet shell

You can learn how to do the unique v-stitch shell from my tutorial and I have a tutorial for the reverse single crochet stitch which is what I added for the hem’s edging.

Some of these patterns call for button closures but I don’t like sewing on buttons so I added ribbon closures, tied on in different ways, as a detail to each of the dresses. They would work on the cardi shrugs as well.

In addition to these baby clothes, I previously made the baby a matching crochet hat and booties, and a basketweave blanket. (The heart is a matching cowl for her small pup.)
