Elin Thomas is a UK-based visual artist who works in a variety of mediums including crochet. Her crochet work was originally inspired by the Hyperbolic Crochet Reef Project and is informed by organic materials including lichen and mold. She sells her textile creations through her Etsy shop. I especially enjoy Elin’s embroidery hoop crochet art and micro crochet best but love all that she’s making.
Elin shares on the “about” page for her shop: “ELINtm works are spread across the globe from Harvard to the Hebrides; featured in the San Francisco Museum of Craft, London’s East End and Stornoway, capital of the wonderful Isle of Lewis, home of Harris Tweed.”
She shares in an Etsy interview: “As an artist, it is important to me to remain connected with the wonder of nature through the childhood pleasures of close observation and making collections. Researching and creating coral inspired work offers endless visual delight and numerous technical challenges — I have learned an enormous amount from attempting to imitate nature.”
I love how Elin takes tiny crochet pieces and uses them as jewelry but also how she combines these pieces into various small art scenes. Both the items for function and those for beauty are eye-catching pieces.
Her crochet pieces are sometimes combined with polymer clay, embroidery and other materials/ techniques.
Apartment Therapy says that Elin’s work doesn’t copy nature but rather that her “handiwork honours it, with astute detail, choice in colours and layout that give these woolen pieces a tactile-inviting presence.”
Regarding the functional pieces, Franca of Oranges and Apples writes, “I love how they incorporate crochet, felt and polymer clay into something organic looking. And those colours! Any of these would make a simple outfit into something stunning! I can imagine any of the brooches or necklaces as a pop of colour on a plain black dress for work or an evening do, or to dress up a jeans and white tshirt combo.”
