The holidays are all about gift giving, which is a good thing if it reminds us to take the focus off of what we want and turn our energies towards giving authentic, love-filled gifts to others. Many of us who crochet do exactly that during this time of year (and all year long) when we infuse hand-crafted items with our attention and then donate them to local or national charities.

Today I want to talk about a charity that you may already know: Make-A-Wish. Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area grants more than 300 wishes annually to children who have battled a life-threatening illness. And that’s just my local chapter that we’re talking about. During this time of year, they offer a really cool way that you can help out other kids while doing something special with your own child.

Your Child’s Letter to Santa Can Help Other Kids

Between November 7 – December 24, visit your local Macy’s store or Macy’s Believe online to submit your child’s letter to Santa and help make dreams come true for Make-A-Wish kids around the country. For every letter received through December 24, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish (up to $1,000,000). This is part of Macy’s Believe campaign.

This year marks the seventh year of Macy’s Believe campaign, which invites believers of all ages to drop off letters to Santa at any Macy’s store by depositing them in special, designated Santa Mail letterboxes. You may also submit your letter online at This year they are aiming to break the Guinness World Record for longest wish list so if you submit your letter online then you just might become a part of holiday history!

One Special Child: Joysee

Joysee is an example of one special child who has been helped by Make-a-Wish. Joysse is a brave 4-year-old girl from San Mateo who was diagnosed with leukemia. She is now in remission but not before several rounds of treatment and missing some normal toddler days. For her one true wish, Joysse asked for a princess party complete with purple and pink decorations, a princess dress with a cape and crown, cake and ice cream and more! She is so excited that she asks her mom, Gabriela, about her it every day. Her party is scheduled for January, but as a surprise, Macy’s will be helping her prepare for her wish with a very special celebration at the San Francisco Union Square location.
