awesome crochet blog awards

Welcome to the 2014 Awesome Crochet Blog Awards.

Today’s award is for:

Best Crochet Book Reviews

And it goes to:

Crochet Kitten

About This Award

Learn more about what these awards are here. This specific award is for the best crochet book reviews. A lot of new crochet books came out in the last year and it’s hard to know which ones are worth buying or not. A good crochet book review reveals information about the book and what types of patterns and information can be found inside. This helps promote what the crochet designer has created while assisting the discerning buyer in choosing how to stock up their crochet library.

About The Winner

The winner of this award is Crochet Kitten. Crochet Kitten is the blog by Stacy, probably better known as The Animator’s Wife, enhanced by the personality of her rescue cat, Selena. Stacy is a veterinary ophthalmology technician who says that “ is run by Selena K, a feral-turned-domestic housecat, because who would know more about working with yarn than a fabulous feline?” Good point!

The Animator’s Wife is a crochet designer who offers tons of free patterns (and some for sale) on her blog. She makes many different types of crochet patterns. Of course, one of the things that she has gotten known for is her crochet kitten patterns. She has a huge collection of crochet patterns for cats that would be perfect for any animal or amigurumi lover.

She shares on Ravelry:

“I learned the art of crochet from my aunt in 1996, and have been belly dancing since 2003. It is in Crochet Kitten that these two loves unite and enable me to stay home with my daughter, Little Lovely. Crochet Kitten is dedicated to spreading the love of crochet and teaching it to the world. My patterns reflect the interests of the household, namely belly dance, fashion, geekery, and pets.”

Why The Winner Won

Here are some of the reasons that I selected this blogger for this crochet award:

  • She gives an honest opinion about each crochet book without giving a recommendation either way regarding whether or not to buy it. A lot of people want a review to be an opinion, and she offers that. Personally, I think a review should be more of an overview because everyone’s opinions are different, so I like that she says what she thinks but doesn’t assume everyone would feel the same way.
  • When there’s something she doesn’t like about a crochet book, she shares what it is and why she feels that way and usually offers a redeeming feature as a counterbalance to that. She’s very fair in her book reviews.
  • Variety of crochet books. She’s shared crochet book reviews this year for books that I was unfamiliar with, which is always neat to see.
  • Each book review really tells us what we can expect from the book. She doesn’t overly reveal anything or inappropriately share information but she does tell us what we’ll find if we choose to purchase this book, which really helps with buying decisions.

In previous years I’ve awarded this blogger:

Other Categories I Could Have Chosen

Each person is only awarded one award each year (and likewise, each award only goes to one person with a few exceptions) but of course each amazing blogger often does many things well. Some of the other categories that I easily could have given this blogger an award for include:

  • Best Crochet Patterns
  • Best Crochet Tutorials
  • Best Crochet for Baby
