I’ve made a number of different large granny square crochet blankets. The one just below this was made from a set of four large squares but usually I follow a different process. First I make a really large square, almost the width that I want the finished item to be (but not quite).
Then I add rows to the top and bottom to make a rectangle. I do this in various stitches – xdc, hdc, dc – depending on my mood, the yarn I’m using, etc.
Then at the end I do another few rounds all the way around the whole blanket so that it has a coheisve edging that offers a more finished look.
I recently made two of these large granny square blankets using almost all of the bulky weight yarn that I had in my house. The images that you see here are various angles of the blankets taken when they were on me or on my couch where I keep them.
So cozy!

I love your free style Kathryn, I think a relaxed approach to crochet can allow yourself to become more artistic and feel a greater sense of achievement at the end of the project sometimes.
carolrmckay Thanks so much. I think it’s a wonderful approach!!
