I don’t ride a bike. I haven’t since I was a kid. Someday I’m going to learn mountain biking but it just hasn’t happened yet. Nevertheless, the bike community interests me. My sister is a bike mechanic. My brother almost biked across the country. I am supportive of Critical Mass and interested by people who bike to work. So even though the bike community isn’t “my” community, per se, I eye it as an outsider. And of course I eye it with an interest in how crochet plays a role in the bicycle community.

If I were cyclist, these are some of the crochet items I might want:

1. Soft leather cycling gloves with hand-crocheted backs.

These were recently reviewed on Road.cc. It’s a great review. Check it out. There are, however, more affordable crochet-enhanced cycling gloves available on Amazon.

2. Crochet Dress Guard.

I see lots of these around the web. These come from a post on Las Teje y Maneje via BlogHer.

3. Vintage Crochet Bicycle Vest

How fun is this? The pattern is available on Amazon from Princess of Patterns.

4. Crochet Bike Basket.

I feel like a crochet bicycle basket would be a must if I did have a bike! The pattern shown above comes from jspirik on Etsy. There’s also an interesting bike basket on Amazon called the Carrie Basket that isn’t actually crochet but is crochet-inspired in design. Perhaps sturdier than one that’s actually crocheted?

5. Crochet Bike Seat Cover

I especially adore this heart one (pattern via CrochetMe).

What would you want as a crochet-loving cyclist?

Yay! I’m go glad you posted about this! My dad is an avid mountain biker and I’ve been trying to come up with something to make him for Christmas. I’m totally going to give him a bike seat cover!

  2. Awesome post! :) I LOVE the dress guards! That’s perfect for my little townie biking town… And no one here has any! Super cool…. (Bike cover is rockin’, too.) Oh, and I have some similar gloves I love! I never thought to see if they were crochet, though, since I bought them like 12 years ago – long before I started biking…

Might have to make my girls baskets like those since they have mountain bikes and can’t have real baskets attached.

@Andi – So glad that you were able to see so many things here that you like!!

  3. I love the crochet basket for the bike! I may try it. My husband is a cyclist and I an a cycling official. Thanks for this wonderful post! Have a great weekend. Hopefully we in the East stay safe and dry!

@Sara-Jane … Hope all is okay there this weekend. Thanks for the great positive feedback on the post!

  4. My daughter wants a seat cover. So I’m slowly working toward making one for her. And she has yarn bombed her bike. But I’ve never taken a photo of it. But it’s pretty cool. Just generally crocheted pieces for various places on it. No rhyme or reason. I love the guards, but she doesn’t have a fender to attach them to, or I’d totally make her those.

@Keri – Would love to see photos of the how she’s yarnbombed her bike! How fun.

  5. Ohh, I love this post, as I am a crochet-loving cyclist! I happen to like the gloves the most–I would definitely use them. Also, hats that fit under the helmet to cover the ears when it’s cold (I’m knitting one right now, but I’d love a crochet one, too!).

As a seasonal cyclist (not in the cold or snow) I’d have to say that the only thing you haven’t covered is some sort of doohickey for the water bottle holder. I would most likely crochet the basket (ADORABLE) or the bike seat!
