A Crochet Interview with Myself

Sometimes on Thursdays I feature a crochet interview, typically with someone who crochets and puts their work on Etsy. I was thinking, though … what if I interviewed myself? I think this is a good way to take some time to reflect on my crochet experiences and a way to allow my readers to get to know me a little bit better. So, I put together a list of questions that I frequently ask in my interviews with crocheters and am going to answer them here.

Q: If you remember, what was the first thing that you ever crocheted?

I first learned to crochet from my mother when I was a kid but all that I learned to make was a foundation chain so the first thing that I crocheted was what just may be the longest crochet chain ever made. :) When I re-taught myself how to crochet a couple of years ago the first thing that I made was a scarf. I was learning from a kids’ crochet book so the scarf ended up being tiny but I still have it hanging up with my other scarves on the wall because it’s special since it’s the first thing I really made.

Q: Where would you say that your inspiration for crochet comes from now?

I get my crochet inspiration from soooo many different sources. I swear I’m always getting ideas for something new that I want to crochet. Some of the most common sources are:

  • The many crochet blogs that I read
  • Fashion blogs and magazines … clothing doesn’t have to be crochet to inspire me to want to make a crochet version
  • Vintage design websites and photos
  • Yarn stores and thrift stores where I see something I want to work with
  • Art and fashion documentaries
  • My own imagination – I take time each day just to daydream with a journal and a sketch pad

Q: What is your favorite crochet item that you have made?

It’s usually whatever the most recent thing I’ve made is! :) I think I’m most proud of the first crochet dress that I made without relying on a pattern:

Q: Is there any item that you don’t enjoy crocheting?

I don’t particularly enjoy working with plarn so eco-friendly items that require that don’t really appeal to me. I’ve only done a little bit of work with crochet thread and find it somewhat tedious but I do enjoy it now and then for small projects. What I really don’t like is having to do a lot of joining or weaving in ends so I prefer to work on monochromatic pieces that can be made in one fell swoop.

Q:  What is your favorite yarn to work with?

Oh, so hard to decide. I love trying different yarns. I can consistently say that I like merino and the merino blends like cashmerino. I like sock yarn although I work with lots of different yarn weights. I recently fell in love with Malabrigo sock yarn – so soft and beautiful! I don’t generally work with the super fuzzy yarns (like mohair). But I’m open to trying most stuff!

Q: For my final question, I always ask … What is one thing about crochet that you want other people to know?

I think that a lot of people fail to recognize how many different aspects there are to crochet. There are people who crochet as a hobby, people who do it artistically and people who do it to make a living. You can find crochet on the runways and in home design stores and all over Etsy and in vintage shops. And behind each of those pieces is a story and a sense of inspiration and creativity. Personally I enjoy exploring all aspects of crochet!

What other questions do you have for me? I’d love to do a second interview on the site if I get enough questions!

  1. I love that dress…if you ever feel like sharing the pattern, let me know! I crochet but I am not that talented to create pieces without patterns. What types of hooks do you use? Do you have some sort of storage for your yarn and hooks? Would love to know what you use to stay organized.

    • @Aprile M. – I am embarrassed to say that I didn’t keep track of what I was doing as I did it so I don’t have a written pattern for it. I know, I know!! I’ll definitely answer your other questions in a future post. Thanks for dropping by and commenting.

  2. Such cute pictures! And I can’t believe you made that dress without a pattern! I just made my own bikini and it looks so funny! I don’t really care since I’ll just be using it on a family vacation, but still! Good job!
