Stitch Red, a Jimmy Beans Wool project, uses needlework to help battle heart disease. I was excited to hear that they are working on a Crochet Red pattern book as part of this project.
Stitch Red is a national campaign to raise awareness about heart disease and to educate the public about how to prevent this condition, que é o #1 killer of women. The goal is to help people realize what factors play into increased likelihood of getting heart disease and to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles to avoid this preventable condition. This is done through raising awareness specifically within the needlearts community.
The Role of Needlearts in Stitch Red
Here are some of the ways that people in the fiber arts industry are helping with Stitch Red:
- Manufacturers are creating products that are labeled Stitch Red and some of the proceeds are going to benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of The Heart Truth.
- Designers are similarly creating patterns, or branding their existing patterns, with Stitch Red to support the same foundation.
- Local yarn stores are carrying these products and hosting events around them to help raise awareness of the program and the issue of heart disease.
A new cook called Knit Red has come out that is part of the Stitch Red project. Co-authored by Jimmy Beans Wool owner Laura Zander this book has “30 eye-catching, red, heart health-inspired garments, accessories and their patterns, as well as personal stories about heart disease from industry greats” and also “also provides tips, resources and recipes for heart-healthy living supplied by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and NHLBI’s campaign–The Heart”. I recognize several of the names of the book’s contributors including Tanis Cinza, Kim Hargreaves, Debbie Bliss, e Nicky Epstein.
Knit Red sounds great but of course I’m a crocheter who doesn’t knit so it only sounded nice to me in a passing sort of way. What I was super excited to find out is that there is now a Crochet Red book in the works, projected for a release date of approximately one year from now. I look forward to seeing who the designers are for this book as it develops.
