I recently received a lovely email from a professional artist named Issa About-Issa who has recently began to branch out into working with crochet. Issa shared some of her work with me so I thought I’d share it with you.
About Crochet Artist Issa Abou-Issa
Abou-Issa de Issa is a Louisiana-based professional artist (originally from New York) who makes visual art and does street art. She always wanted to learn how to crochet and finally decided to teach herself using YouTube videos. She made her first crochet prokect not too long ago and used it to yarnbomb a New York City tree. An image of her tree was used as inspiration on a website and she felt really encouraged to continue this work. This artist is currently represented by Seion Gallery, located in Houma, LA.
Pop Culture Crochet
Issa’s recent explorations in crochet are 2d artworks inspired by pop culture. I’m a big fan of her Pacman ghost. (You may or may not know that I’m a master of Ms. Pacman!)
Where It’s Going
I’m really curious to see where Issa goes with her crochet work in the months to come. I love the way thatt she’s working in 2-3 colors on flat surfaces for now, using graphic shapes to evoke a strong visual reaction. As she gets more and more experience with the hooks, it’ll be interesting to see how her work changes!
