If you follow my Sunday Instagram roundup posts then you’ve already seen some of the magical, inspired work that artist Oliviartcreations has shared there. I love what she does. It has a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and a terrific sense of color, and I wanted to share more of it here with you today.
Vicky Harrison is a teacher, artist and crochet lover who runs the shop Paper Village in Bristol. The shop is a base for collaborative community-oriented arts projects including popular crochet projects.
I was excited to see that 1970s crochet artist Bonnie Meltzer is teaching a workshop this fall called Creative Crochet Sculpture. Although I can’t attend myself, it looks like a great opportunity to explore new dimensions in crochet art.
I was happily surprised when I received a newsletter from crochet artist Nathan Vincent announcing that his first solo museum exhibit opened yesterday. I wasn’t surprised that he has an exhibit – I was surprised to realize that he hadn’t had a solo show at a museum before now! He’s a terrific, prolific crochet artist who I love to support in any way that I can.
Ann Benoot is a self-taught textile artist from Belgium who does terrific creative work with crochet art. She has been working on a beautiful series of crocheted Zentangle power animals that I find to be unique and interesting. In this interview, she tells us about the inspiration for those, her history with the craft and what it’s been like to find her creative voice.
I learned to crochet when I was a child but didn’t really do much with it until I was in my late 20s. I was going through a battle with depression and there wasn’t a whole lot that I had energy for but I remembered that I liked to crochet when I was young so I decided to learn again. I began with making basic scarves and blankets but then began to create a variety of art in crochet. I love that this is a form of self-expression that I can embrace even though I’m not skilled at arts like drawing, painting or sculpting!
When I put together my recent roundup of driftwood+crochet inspiration, I stumbled upon the work of crochet artist Susanna Bauer. I realized I’d actually seen her beautiful designs before, and I was surprised to see that I’d never done an article about the amazing stuff that she does with organic materials and crochet. Well, here’s that post.
