The Daily Mail recently reported that paper doilies are making a comeback. The article is a pretty interesting look at how there’s been a recent resurrection in the lost art of baking. I certainly think that this is true. Home baking can be a creative outlet, an affordable alternative to going out for dessert and a way to add domestic bliss to your home. That’s all stuff that people (particularly but not only women) are interested in these days.
So yes doilies are making a comeback. For that matter, cake stands are making a comeback thanks not only to more baking but also to the revival of 1950′s kitsch as well as the new granny chic trend. And doilies are clearly the perfect complement to the cake stand.
But what perturbs me a little bit is the fact that it’s paper doilies that are apparently making a comeback. What about crochet doilies? If we’ve learned nothing from the recession and the DIY movement, shouldn’t we have learned that handcrafted non-throwaway items reign supreme over the short life spans of throwaway manufactured products? The Daily Mail article says that one kitchenware store has sold 17 million paper doilies in the past 8 rok. That’s a lot of doilies that are presumably being used once and then heading into landfills.
I’m the first to admit that doilies are a tough one for crocheters. The work required for them is more detailed and time consuming than some crocheters want to invest in. And doilies, like granny squares, have a bad reputation in the general public as being the exact items that deter people from wanting to crochet. (I don’t actually entirely understand this but it seems to be the case that if you’re a crocheter and you’re talking to someone who doesn’t crochet, they immediately think doilies and granny squares and turn up their noses!) And I’ll also admit that making a handcrafted doily only to soil it with cake may be a little bit frustrating. But still, it just seems a little bit wrong that if doilies are truly making a comeback, it’s in the paper form.
