Did you know that today is the first ever White House Maker Faire, celebrating makers around the nation? What a fun idea! I’m celebrating here on the blog with Great.ly by sharing some of my favorite crochet makers. You can purchase their items for sale in my Great.ly boutique. Support the idea by spreading the word about Maker Faire day using #NationOfMakers.
A Little Bit More About Maker Faire
“America has always been a nation of tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs. But in recent years, a growing number of Americans have gained access to technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, easy-to-use design software, and desktop machine tools. These tools are enabling more Americans to design and build almost anything.
To celebrate America’s students and entrepreneurs who are inventing the future with these new technologies and techniques, the President is hosting the first-ever White House Maker Faire on Wednesday, Juni 18. The event will feature Makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life.
The rise of the Maker Movement represents a huge opportunity for the United States. Nationwide, new tools for democratized production are boosting innovation and entrepreneurship in manufacturing, in the same way that the Internet and cloud computing have lowered the barriers to entry for digital startups, creating the foundation for new products and processes that can help to revitalize American manufacturing.”
My Great.ly Boutique
I help celebrate and support makers by highlighting, promoting and selling their work through mijn Great.ly boutique. I focus on curating high-quality crochet items including jewelry, home goods and accessories. I am especially interested in promoting crochet art and Fair Trade crochet artisans. Additionally, I also share some other fiber art, textiles and soft goods that aren’t crochet but are in the same crafty neighborhood. Meer informatie.
Featured Maker: Kelli Ronci
One of the crochet makers I want to feature today is Kelli Ronci and her brand Corda. “Working out of her studio set amongst the Redwoods in Mill Valley, CA, Kelli draws on the organic forms and tones that surround her, combining modern and vintage elements to create and design pieces reflecting a bohemian-chic aesthetic. While the majority of her creations are rooted in crochet, she also incorporates techniques from other fiber arts such as knitting, Macramé, and weaving.”
Some of her items in my Great.ly shop:
“Handmade Ethiopian beads are crocheted with lustrous, hand-painted silk yarn and steam-finished to create the luxurious draping quality of the leaf necklace.”
Alpaca crochet coasters
Featured Maker: Margie Rahmann
Margie is part of a creative duo. “A crafted life, with busy hands and full hearts. We are a great creative team – a wonderful mix of left and right brain! Justin has the quick mind of a programmer and a plethora of hands on skills, while Margie has a unique visual style that combines the rustic charm of upcycled materials and traditional crafts with the slick minimal aesthetic of her interior design training.”
