Kunstenaar Stephanie Syjuco van The Counterfeit Crochet Project

Stephanie Syjuco is de kunstenaar achter het Counterfeit Crochet Project (Kritiek van een politieke economie), een langdurig comunity-based haak kunstproject dat moment heeft werk tentoongesteld in het Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles.

Stephanie Syjuco is een Filipijnen-geboren, San Francisco gebaseerde kunstenaar die ambachtelijke geniet en heeft een sterke interesse in problemen rond piraterij en de reproductie van het werk van anderen. Haar bio legt uit dat ze “creëert grootschalige spektakels van de verzamelde culturele objecten, cumulatieve archieven, en tijdelijke verkoopautomaten installaties, vaak met een actieve publieke component die uitnodigt kijkers om direct deel te nemen als producenten of distributeurs”. Ze verkent het concept van de community gemaakte kunst (waaronder shareware) en het contrast tussen high en low end kunst en materialen in haar werk. Recht in lijn met dit is haar werk in het verkennen van namaak, die ze heeft gedaan op verschillende manieren, waaronder onderwijs internationale workshop over namaak.

Het Counterfeit Crochet Project

Stephanie gelanceerd Het Counterfeit Crochet Project weer 2006. She asked crocheters to find a photo of a designer handbag and then to use their crochet skills to recreate that handbag to the best of their ability as a high-quality handcrafted knockoff. The project explores the concept of ownership of ceratin designs and what it means to appropriate that in handcrafting.

Stephanie explains a bit more on her artist website:

“The resulting “translations” are both homages and lumpy mutations. Crochet is considered a lowly medium, and the limitations imposed by trying to create detail with yarn takes advantage of the individual maker’s ingenuity and problem-solving skills.

I am also interested in how this project can be similar to contemporary manufacturing and distribution channels. As a collaboration it parallels the idea of “outsourcing” labor, but also adds a democratic and perhaps anarchic level of creativity–within the basic framework, participants have taken liberties with their translations, changing colors, adding materials (cardboard, hot glue, etc.) to suit their needs.

Makers are encouraged to keep and wear their bags, in an attempt to insert strange variants into the stream of commerce and consumption.”

The project really took off with contributions from many different types of people, probably people who held a lot of different beliefs about the fashion industry and the craft industry. One thing that I think that the Counterfeit Crochet Project really highlights is the issue of who has the right to make money off of intellectual property and how does that play out in the real world. On the one hand, you want artists to be able to retain the rights to their individual work and not have that copied by big business. On the other hand, do we afford those same rights to large designers? Large fahsion companies have been known to mass produce their own designs using cheap overseas labor so what is the “bad” in copying those designs as a handcrafter on a small scale?

To be clear, I’m not saying one way or another what I think that the answers to these questions are. I just think that these are the types of questions that The Counterfeit Crochet Project brings up. We are asked by this artist’s work to question ownership over art and ideas.

Ambachtelijke kunst en Folk Museum Exhibit

Zakken de Counterfeit Crochet Project zijn te zien in exposities over de hele wereld, waaronder in China, de Filipijnen en San Francisco. De beste gehaakte afslaan handtassen uit de Counterfeit Crochet Project tentoongesteld zijn nu tot en met mei 5, 2013 op Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. Het is onderdeel van het sociale weefsel tentoonstelling er. Deze tentoonstelling, zoals beschreven in het persbericht, is:

“een tentoonstelling van zeven hedendaagse kunstenaars die de problemen van de massaproductie en-consumptie te confronteren via glasvezel gebaseerde kunst die sociale betrokkenheid en interactie tussen overheid bevat”

Stephanie Syjuco is eigenlijk het onderwijzen sommige beginner en gevorderde haak workshops in het museum als onderdeel van deze tentoonstelling.

Toevallig, als de naam van dit museum je bekend voorkomt kan het zijn, want ik heb meerdere malen gezegd dat Yarnbombing Los Angeles zit nog op de gevel van het gebouw met oma vierkanten. Deze tentoonstelling is ingesteld om omhoog te gaan in medio mei, kort na de tentoonstelling dat Stephanie's een deel van zal sluiten.
