Ontwerper haak Project: Christian Lacroix

It may be a new year but I’m definitely continuing on with a project started last year: de Ontwerper haak Project. We’ve already looked at crochet designs and possibilities in the works of five designers (Alexander McQueen, Andre Courreges, Azzedine Alaia, Calvin Klein en Christian Dior). That leaves 45 more to go so we’ll continue on with the next designer on the list: Christian Lacroix.

Fashion Designer Christian Lacroix

Christian Lacroix was born in France in the early 1950’s. In the 1980’s he hit the fashion scene with some amazing haute couture dresses, skipping the usual designer process of making ready-to-wear-collections before heading into haute couture. During an era when most fashion designers were putting outpower suitstyle dresses, Lacroix encouraged women to play with fashion and to use true imagination to enjoy opulent clothing. Lacroix hadn’t even intended to go into fashion at first. He wanted to be a museum curator but life took its twists and turns and his fashion-forward wife Francoise Rosentheil introduced him to her boss who introduced Lacroix to the Paris haute couture scene. The rest is history. His fashions were an immediate hit. Helaas, these designs were expensive one-of-a-kind art pieces that people loved but didn’t necessarily buy. His fashion house was open for twenty two years but never once turned a profit and ended up closing in May 2009.
