Last May I mentioned the beautiful colorful neo-doilies by Asimina Chremos. I was recently reminded of her work so I got in touch with the artist to see what had been going on for her lately.
Asimina on Etsy Blog
A thanks to Wink of Un essere creativo who mentioned Asimina to me on Facebook recently, which inspired me to check out what she was up to. Wink linked me to a profile of Asimina’s Etsy shop Silverspace that was on the Etsy blog in December.
What Asimina does is re-invents the traditional doily by changing the shape into a more freeform organically-inspired shape. She typically does very colorful work, although that’s not all that she does. I love the way that she photographs these neo-doilies in creative ways. Although she elevates the doily to modern art, she doesn’t frame the pieces for hanging on the wall because she wants them to be seen, touched and used in the home like traditional doilies.
Neutral Neo-Doilies in Silverspace
Amo il lavoro davvero colorato che fa Asimina, ma anche lei funziona a meraviglia con i colori più neutri, come si vede nella cyane Doily nel suo negozio Etsy Silverspace:
We also see it in her Thousand-Year-Egg Doily:
Fun Fact: The Name Silverspace
I love what Asimina said in her Etsy blog post about the name of her shop and how it correlates with her crochet work:
“For most of my life, I have identified as a dancer. Silverspace was the name of my dance studio, now it’s the name of my Etsy shop. When I transitioned to a 9-5 desk job a couple of years ago, I poured all my love of free movement and improvisation into my crochet hobby. With my crochet, I can do something that dance can’t show, which is play with colors.”
Asimina in Boutique Shop
When I got in touch with Asimina to see how things are going, she mentioned that in addition to being busy making items for Etsy, she’s also been able to place a couple of doilies with a Philadelphia boutique that has a rotating show of artists inside of a clothing store. Check it out at Sugarcube.
