Barack Obama crochet by Todd Paschall

President Obama received crocheted silver beanies this weekend from an attendee of the wreath-laying ceremonial for Bombing of Darwin Day in Australia.

The president went to Darwin, Australia for a wreath-laying ceremony at the USS Peary Memorial. This is a memorial for 88 US marines who were killed during WWII by an attack on their ships. President Obama compared the experience to America’s Pearl Harbour. After the ceremony, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that the day will heretofore be known as the Bombing of Darwin Day to honor those killed in the attacks.

Only a few people were chosen to attend the ceremony and meet President Obama. One of those people was Mary Lee whose father was killed in the attacks. She wanted to give a gift to the president for taking the time to recognize this part of history. She brought three crocheted flower-adorned beanies inside of a silver bag to give to the president’s children.

Mary Lee was told that she would not be able to give these gifts. Tuttavia, she managed to get the attention of a woman traveling with Obama’s crew and was given special permission to send the gifts to the president’s kids.

Question of the Day: If you could crochet something for President Obama and his family, what would you make for them?
