Citazione del crochet: Granny

I have been reading the essays in Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot

Every time crocheting gets labeled cool or trendy, someone somewhere, who I am sure thinks that he or she is being very clever and original, dice, ‘This is not your grandmother’s crochet!’ Like that’s a good thing. One of the things I like about crochet is that my mother did it, and my grandmother probably did, troppo. I personally don’t want to disengage from Granny but to take her work and move forward from it.

What do you think of the oft-heart statementit’s not your grandma’s crochet”?

  1. I think half the time it IS my grandma’s crochet, and the other half it strays away from afghans and kitchen accessories. :) I myself have used a similar phrase:

Let’s see you claim my hobby is for grannies now, nay-sayers!”

In my defense, I doubt that most people’s grannies have crocheted themselves a monokini, which is the context for that quote. :)

    • As a follow up, most crochet magazines that come out today are also full of patters that are not my granny’s crochet. There are tons of new clothing styles that come out in crochet all the time that older people just would never have made.

      • @Calophi – Sì, that’s all definitely true. There are a lot of things now that grandma wouldn’t have made, partially because of changing styles and partially because of changes in crochet and the materials available to us for the craft now. However I agree with the quote’s point that it is something that shouldn’t be said in a way that is derogatory to what was made in the past. Often it’s phrased in such a way to make it seem like all of Granny’s work was fuddy duddy, which isn’t true, entrambi.

  2. This looks like such a wonderful book! Thanks for introducing me to it. I think I’m going to buy a copy! As for celebrating my grandmother’s crochetdefinitely! I’m hooked on grannies and I’m not afraid to say it!

I love Mary Beth’s quote. My grandmother was an amazing artisan, and actual many of her clothing designs were very fashion forward. I think a lot of it depends on how skilled your own grandmother was lol, or if she was relying on cheezy patterns from back in the day.
