I still haven’t had the opportunity to go to a yarn crawl. For those are not familiar with this term (it’s in the crochet glossary) a yarn crawl is basically like a pub crawl but for yarn lovers instead of drinkers. A group of people gets together and takes a trek from one yarn store to the next throughout a city. I think that the best place to do this would be in Buenos Aires, a city where there are about a one dozen yarn stores within a two block stretch in a yarn district. Tuttavia, there’s a yarn crawl happening much closer to home – the Portland Filati Crawl.
The Portland Yarn Crawl was launched last year and is now having its second annual event. Their website has a terrific in-depth description of what a yarn crawl is:
“The goal of every Yarn Crawl is to acquaint all fiber enthusiasts and artists with regional independent retailers and the companies that supply and distribute the yarns and accessories they carry. This is done by creating a self guided itinerary for the exploration of participating stores over the course of a weekend. The stores participate by underwriting the crawl and creating special promotions and a weekend of excitement and exploration. Participating companies share in underwriting the event and contribute full sized samples of their marvelous products which are included in the raffle baskets that are on display at every store along the crawl. There is one raffle basket for every store.”
The Portland Yarn Crawl is a three-day event that starts on March 4th. People can visit the stores in any order that they choose but are asked to sign in when they get there. Those who wish to can participate in a scavenger hut to find roses at all of the different yarn stores. As of the writing of this post there are 19 stores scheduled for the crawl.
This sounds like such an amazing fun event. First of all, you have an excuse to visit nineteen different yarn stores. That’s a lot of new yarn to enjoy! It’s also a great way to meet other yarn lovers at an event that brings you all together. I doubt that I’m going to be able to get away for a trek up to Portland in a few weeks but I’d really like to go at some point.
Have you been to a yarn crawl? Do tell me about it!
