Last week for Le Projet Crochet Designer we looked at Jean Paul Gaultier, who is a designer I already knew a lot about. This week we’re looking at Jil Sander, whose name I know but I don’t know a lot about her yet. Let’s explore together!
Fashion Designer Jil Sander
Jil Sander Fall/ Winter 2012 runway show
To find out more about Jil Sander I’ll turn to my trusty book: 50 Créateurs de mode que vous devez savoir. I learned immediately that this German fashion designer is known for her minimalist design. Sander got experience first as a textile engineer and then opened her own fashion boutique in Hamburg in 1968. Five years later she presented her first collection at Paris Fashion Week although it was largely ignored by the fashion media. It took about ten years for fashion to catch up with her minimalist ideas so it was in the mid 1980s that her work really took off. In the late 1990′s Sander sold off a portion of her brand to Prada as a business move but she ended up regretting the move. She couldn’t seem to work well with the brand and she kind of disappeared from the fashion scene for a little while. Cependant, just a few years ago she returned to the business with her own fashion consultancy firm, taking the position as the creative director of a Japanese fashion chain called Uniql as her first client job, a position she kept for about three years. For quite awhile someone else (Raf Simons) was actually the creative director of the Jil Sander label but it was announced last year that Jil was returning to head the label.
Jil Sander Crochet
Here is some of the Jil Sander crochet I was able to find online:

Men’s Crochet Sweater by Jil Sander
Jil Sander crochet crop top and skirt
All sources online say that this Jil Sander sweater is crocheted but it looks like knit to me. Pensées?

Other Jil Sander Designs
These may not be crochet but they are Jil Sander designs that I think are really cute:

What do you think of Jil Sander as a fashion designer who uses crochet?
