I’ve participated in variations on this conversation before but I think it’s an important one so I’m making it this week’s Friday Open Discussion. The topic is: what do you call yourself?

What I mean is, how do you refer to your crochet work when talking to others? Do you call yourself a crocheter, un artiste, an artisan, a fiber artist, a crafter, un fabricant, a creator, a small business owner … or something else?

Why do you choose the terms that you do? Do they differ depending on the audience you’re speaking to? Does using any of the other terms make you feel uncomfortable?

I believe wholeheartedly that the words that we choose have power. So I ask … what do you call yourself? And why?

I like to use crochet designer or crochet artist as I tend to work with plastic yarn or plarn.

Usually it is "I crochet" followed by a question "do you knit as well?" (I get the impression it is expected in Australia that people knit first and foremost and maybe do a bit of crochet - if they MUST). My answer is I like knit but I don't do it because I am too slow at it. In actual fact I just like crocheting and crochet so much more although I have knitted item that I find to be invaluable and irreplaceable (and it is true I am too slow at knitting).

@carolmckayau I get the knitting question if I'm talking to people who know what crochet is. But with most of the tech-y guys I've met they just give me a blank look and don't even know what crochet is at all. So unfortunately then I end up saying, "bien, it's kind of like knitting" because they know what that is.

I call myself a crocheter or a crochet artist. I do other crafty things to but right now in my life I am a crocheter & proud of it. Why do I call myself this,because I am proud to be part of this art & I want people to know that's what I do.

@icrochetinoh Love that! I usually say "crochet blogger" ou "I crochet" ou "artiste crochet" when it's any kind of audience that will know what crochet is. I tend to meet a lot of tech-minded, science-minded guys around here so with them it's more like "I'm a blogger" and then when they follow up I'll explain that I blog about crafty things like crochet, often requiring an explanation of what crochet is.
