Mon Crochet: Pull en levrette

pet crochet 500x413 My Crochet: Doggie Sweater

I used to be one of those people who couldn’t fathom why someone would dress up their pets. A sweater for a dog? No thanks. My big Chow/Lab mix would’ve kicked my butt if I had tried that on her! But then I moved to San Francisco and got used to people having smaller dogs and slowly I got used to people putting clothes on their dogs. And somehow I became someone who buys Christmas gifts for my best friend’s little dog. So it’s not all that surprising that eventually I’d want to crochet something for her.

Meet Betty. She’s a cockapoo who lives in the heart of San Francisco. She’s a high energy dog and she doesn’t always love keeping her clothes on but after just a minute of scratching at this sweater she decided that she was comfortable and cozy and spent the rest of the day lounging around in it.

I based the design on the Urban Granny Dog Sweater which is a crochet patron gratuit from Lion Brand Yarn. I used it to help me get the size right and to get the basic idea for the neck although I didn’t follow the pattern for the neck and didn’t use the suggested yarn. For the neck I did one of my favorite stitch patterns, the fpdc, bpdc across a row to create a double-ribbed fabric.

The yarn that I used was a mohair and silk blend yarn that I’d gotten for gratuite sur Listia. It’s not exactly the easiest in terms of washing care but Betty’s an indoor dog and she won’t be wearing it every day so it should be okay. I love the color of the mohair yarn and I mixed that with a cream cotton yarn for a color combo I really like. I’m happy with the end result and I have to confess that there’s a good chance that Betty will be getting another sweater in the near future.
