92-Crocheter años gana orden de reina de caballería

Robina Parkes is a 92-year-old woman who is on the Queen’s 2012 Honores de año nuevo. Esto significa que recibirá un MBE, una orden del premio caballerosidad, el cual está en parte por su trabajo generoso del ganchillo.

MBE for Services to the Community

I don’t know much about this type of stuff but Wikipedia tells me that the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a chivalry honor that is awarded that is bestowed upon various people including knights, dames and commanders. The lowest of the five classifications of this award is to be a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or to get an MBE. This is what Parkes has been awarded.

About Robina Parkes

Robina Parkes is a mother of four although she lost one daughter who was only twenty years old when she died from cancer. She is widowed. She deals with these losses in part by giving back to her community, primarily through her church.

Parkes Charity Donations

Robina Parkes is 92 and has been donating her domestic craft skills to other members of her community since she was in her early twenties. That’s seventy years that she’s been giving of herself to help others. She has done this through crochet as well as through baking and preserving jam. Por ejemplo, she has sold her jams, baked goods and handcrafted crochet items to raise thousands of pounds for donation to the Northern Ireland Hospice and the Children’s Hospice. Hospice is an important cause to her because when her own daughter died from cancer there were no hospice options available and Parkes nursed her at home for seven weeks until she passed away.

    • @65Mary65Thanks for your great comment. There will be more stories like this one throughout the year and they’ll be put together into a book like the 2011 book I did called When Grandma’s Not Crocheting, Ella es caza de grande. Until recently I hadn’t done a lot of charity work or crochet for others either. Whereas many crocheters tend to make things for others, I am like you and love to make stuff for myself especially when it’s from good yarn. But maybe if I’m still crocheting when I’m 92 I won’t be wanting any more crochet things for myself!! :) Thanks for your great comment.
