Marinke, who shares her story about crocheting to heal in my book Πλέκω έσωσε τη ζωή μου, deals with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is part of the autism spectrum. When she shared her story with me, she also shared a video that someone had created that explains what autism is like to those of us who don’t have it. She shared it again in her review of Crochet Saved My Life and I wanted to share it here.
Marinke also said to me (and in different words in her own post):
“At the end of the video the narrator asks what you do to cope with autism. And for me, it’s crochet! Crochet makes the noises fade almost completely into the background, making my life easier to cope with.”
In Crochet Saved My Life, Marinke explains that the repetition in crochet offers her a chance to relax and create a sense of flow throughout the day so that she can get through stressful situations. At the same time, it is a focused activity that isn’t boring and in fact allows creativity, which is great for people on the autism spectrum who often have a heightened sense of their creative side.
Reading the other stories in Crochet Saved My Life showed Marinke that she wasn’t alone. She said in her review:
