* Sister Diane of CraftyPod *
Best Craft Business Information
Today’s Awesome Crochet Blog Award is for the best blog that offers the best craft business information. Many of my readers have their own small businesses including Etsy shops and selling items at craft fairs and a lot of others are interested in doing that someday. It’s a wonderful way of life but it’s also a tough way to make a living so it’s important that there are blogs out there that provide the truth about how it is along with practical tips for success.
About The Winner
Diane Gilleland, AKA Sister Diane, is a strong businesswoman who brings resources and information to the craft community. In addition to being a writer, teacher and speaker, Diane is a Church of Craft chapter founder, the voice behind the Craftypod craft business podcast series, the creator of Craftypod Publishing and an all around cool woman. Her blog includes interviews, top book reviews, the latest podcast episodes, tips and more.
3 Reasons The Winner Won
I follow quite a few craft business blogs. Plus a lot of the crochet bloggers and designers I follow give insights into their businesses. I narrowed this winner down to Sister Diane because:
- Diane constantly re-works the best way to provide information to her readers and listeners. For example, she realized that on-blog text-based interviews weren’t necessarily working so well so this year she launched her image-only interview series, which is a great way to get a sense of what some other creative business people are doing and thinking about. I love that she takes these chances and provides information in creative ways.
- She supplements her knowledge with that of many other professionals for a well-rounded view of the craft business life. Diane does a lot of interviews in various mediums. She’s hosted G+ hangouts with various crafty entrepreneurs and shared those on her blog. She reviews important books and tells us why they are important. She headed up a multi-blogger tutorial series recently on taking better craft photos. She has her own voice and shares the experience and viewpoint she has but she doesn’t pretend to know all there is to know about craft business (or even that there is one “right” way) and shares lots of other perspectives as well.
- I really enjoyed this year’s series on “how I supported free” as well as the series on how Diane makes her online diet healthier. These were monthly posts that gave a lot of insight into how she practices self-improvement in her life in practical ways and I think that was really inspiring to a lot of people. These posts also told readers a lot about a variety of cool business/ crafty things around the web.
It didn’t affect my choice of winner in any way but I want to say a special thanks to Diane for interviewing me for her podcast this year as well as allowing me to be one of the first people interviewed in her terrific image-only series.
