Helmut Lang Self-Portrait, via NY Times Blogs
I don’t know about you but I’m having a great time each week looking through the full collections of work by famous fashion designers to see if they’ve ever offered or been inspired by crochet. This week up on the Designer Crochet Project is Helmut Lang.
Fashion Designer Helmut Lang
Helmut Lang Runway, 1992
Simone Werle’s 50 Fashion Designers You Should Know tells me that Helmut Lang is an Austrian designer who opened a boutique in 1976 and founded his own fashion business in the mid 1980s but really came into his own in the 1990s when his style helped defined the minimal chic approach to fashion of that era. It also tells me that his clothing was especially popular with creative intellectuals at the close of the twentieth century because it was high quality clothing that allowed the individual’s personality to stand out above the clothing.
Lang has an interesting personality, doing things that kind of set him apart a bit as an intellectual snob. Beispielsweise, in 2000 he was named as the first non-American accepted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America and he chose not to show up to accept the honor. In 2005 he decided to give up his fashion business, selling it to Prada which eventually sold the label to a Japanese fashion organization called Link Theory which continues to run the label with different designers today. People continued to love Lang, obwohl, as evidenced by a solo retrospective of his work at an art gallery in Germany in 2008 and a solo art exhibition in East Hampton in 2011.
Helmut Lang Crochet
I haven’t found any crochet in Helmut Lang’s original work (if you know of any, I’d love to see it!) but crochet has been a part of collections from the brand since it was sold to Prada and then Link Theory.
The Helmut Lang brand put crochet on the NYFW runway for Spring Summer 2012
Dies $210 crochet tank is also a recent one from the Helmut Lang brand, we see it here on Chelsea Handler via Hamptons magazine
Helmut Lang Alpaca Crochet Sweater via Saks Fifth Avenue
At first I didn’t think this sweater, labeled as a crochet back sweater, was really crochet but then I saw the close up detail thanks to The Outnet.
Helmut Lang I’d Love To See Reinvented in Crochet
I’d love to see a crochet version of this awesome knit Helmut Lang sweater dress! Über KnitGrandeur
I think the texture of this vintage beaded racer tank from Helmut Lang lends itself well to reinvention in popcorn stitch or bobbles.
Can’t you see a crochet version of this Helmut Lang bustier on Etsy? I absolutely can.
