Last week for the Designer Crochet Project post we looked at a well-known brand with a lot of crochet in their lines: Dolce & Gabbana. This week we’re looking at someone whose name you may not know: Dries Van Noten.
About Fashion Designer Dries Van Noten
I’ll admit that I wasn’t familiar with this fashion designer until his name came up next in line in my alphabetical review of Simone Werle’s 50 Fashion Designers You Should Know. The book explains that he is one of “the Antwerp Six, six avant-garde Belgian designers who exerted a lasting influence on the eighties fashion scene with their conceptual garments”. That caught my attention because I love how avant-garde fashion is more art than wearable (so it’s fun to look at). Besides, the eighties definitely had their own crazy sense of style! Dries Van Noten wasn’t just an eighties designer, though. Although his first collection went straight to the racks of Barneys back then, he’s hung on with a continually growing enterprise. As of 2009 he had 400 retail stores around the world. What’s neat is that he’s a successful designer who is also humble. He makes it a point of selling creative clothing, not labels, as well as trying to create clothes that are more about the personality of the wearer than of the designer. This guy sounds cool. But does he have any crochet? Let’s take a look.

Polyvore says this is a Dries van Noten crochet scarf but I’ve seen it listed as knit elsewhere. Not sure.
Wearing Crochet with Dries Van Noten
Dries Van Noten designs are already so bold that it’d be tough to wear other crochet with the brand’s statement pieces. My suggestion? I’d wear my own crochet with some bold Dries van Noten shoes that hint at crochet style like these:
