91-Year-Old Hooker Wins Prize

Ruth W. Umberger didn’t start crocheting until her sixties but at 91 years of age she’s still got about thirty years of hooking under her belt. Her effort hasn’t gone to waste considering that she just won a Virginia State Fair award for her crochet afghans.

The Virginia State Fair has offered crafting awards for years. However, this year was the first year that they had a seniors category for crafters over the age of 80. That’s the category that Umberger won.

Umberger says that she never had any interest in knitting but she did learn to crochet from her sister. As she’s gotten older and her health has started to fail, she’s had to spend more time sitting down and so her crochet time has grown and grown. She had more than 100 crochet afghans to choose from for her submission to the fair and of course that doesn’t include the many that she’s given away as gifts over the years.

The crochet afghan that ultimately got entered and won the prize is a blanket of square motifs but they aren’t granny squares. With a diamond in the center offset but red, pink and beige stitches, this blanket really pops!
