The next name up on the list for The Designer Crochet Project is John Galliano. I suspect before I even get started with my research that there isn’t a lot of crochet from this designer. He has gorgeous edgy designs, though, so let’s take a look at what we can learn about him.

Fashion Designer John Galliano
I know a bit about John Galliano because I saw a great documentary on him on Hulu awhile back (part one of the five parts is shown in the video above). But let’s turn to the book 50 Fashion Designers You Should Know to get the basics. John Galliano was born in 1960 in Gibraltar. He graduated at age 24 from the popular Central Saint Martins College for Art & Design in London and immediately began working as an independent fashion designer, showing his first collection the following year. From that time on his work has always shown impeccable taste and stitchery beneath and elaborate sense of historically-inspired style that borders on costume. Words that frequently come up when people talk about his work include “theatrical” and “romantic” but everyone is also quick to point out that there is superior quality to all of the creations.
Galliano, now based in Paris, has not only worked on his own designs but also been a leading designer in various fashion houses including Balenciaga, Givenchy and especially Dior. He has received numerous awards over the years, including being the British Designer of the Year many times and receiving the prestigious French Legion of Honor. In 2011 Galliano got into some legal trouble that resulted in him facing criminal charges and being released from working with Dior. He’s been mostly laying low since then although there are rumors (which have been denied here and there) that he will work next with Schiaparelli. He continues to put out his own fashion work.
John Galliano Crochet
So what I found as I started researching was that much of the crochet by Galliano was in small details on accessories:
Galliano woven hat with crochet flower
Galliano crochet scarf/ shawl
There are also some crochet tank tops in the Galliano line:
The listing on Mighty Kismet says that this crochet top is a Galliano top beaded with lucite crystal drops.
A knit tank top with crochet details from Galliano
And a few larger pieces:
This Galliano dress was posted on Polyvore and listed as crochet. I can’t tell for sure if it is because I can’t find an image anywhere else that shows better detail. I can definitely see hints of a crochet motif, though, even if it turns out not to really be crochet.
Galliano Worn with Other Crochet
Galliano doesn’t get to claim credit for this amazing teal dress (more photos here) but he is responsible for the shoes that go with it.
Crochet Inspired by Galliano
Mua Mua Dolls is an art factory in Bali that makes many beautiful things including a set of crochet dolls inspired by designers and other artists. Here’s their Galliano:
