For et år siden: Olek, Laurbær Roth, hækling søm ordbog, Etsy’s onajeans crochet
Let’s take a look at what was going on in crochet in early March 2011 and see what’s changed or happened since.
Hæklet Art
Olek honored Banksy. I’m actually surprised that this was already a full year ago. Olek has done tons of stuff since then but it felt like this one was more recent. This was also the final week of a New York show for Olek last year. Her current show is happening in London; it’s her first international art show.
I wrote about Loughborough in Bloom, a crochet art project designed to add colorful handmade clowers to the plant life of a UK town to beautify it in an eco-friendly way.
And I did a profile of crochet artist Laurel Roth (work shown above). Lately she seems to be working more with wood than crochet but she’s still on the same mission with her work which is to “use art to examine biological ramifications of human behavior and humankind’s drive to modify itself as well as its environment. By playing with the convergence of biology and product design to create new cultural artifacts, I try to question social constructions of need, design, and individual desire.”
Hæklede Books
The book I reviewed was 220 Flere Hæklede Sømme which is a crochet stitch dictionary from The Harmony Guides. I recommended it as a good addition to a crochet library because it offers a diverse range of stitches in different niches of crochet including filet crochet and Irish Lace. Later in the year I also reviewed another Harmony Guides stitch dictionary called Hæklede Stitch Motiver.
Hæklet News
I wrote about cro-hooking as a family tradition. And how an 88 year old crocheter won an award. And how the Crochet Club of London had made 600 blankets for donation to more than 100 agencies.
I also shared that it was time for the Colorplay Reader Challenge, a scarf making challenge by Knitting Daily and Tahki Yarns in which the winner got 40 skeins of yarn! There was a winner in both the knitting and crochet categories. The crochet category winner was Stephanie Sario’s “A Tangle of Color“:
And I knew that it was International Women’s Day (March 8th) so I shared some reasons why crochet made sense as a form of celebration.
Hæklet Fashion
I talked about the Elizabethan Ruff as inspiration for crochet. I haven’t done anything with it but I still think that this would be a terrific source of crochet cowl inspiration.
I also shared this great vintage suitcase inspired by crochet designs.
Anna Sui put lots of great crochet onto her spring runway. She continues to include great crochet in her collections but what I love most from her right now is an ad for her new fragrance that features is a bright pink retro crochet top:

Hæklede Citater:
De hæklede citater, der blev vist på denne hjemmeside i løbet af denne samme uge sidste år, var:
“Crocheting and knitting are by nature localized, insular and disparate arts, with small, isolated enclaves of familial or local groups passing down their methods from parent to child, or mentor to apprentice.” – Sarah Johnson
“Most folks don’t believe me when I tell them, men min mor vil bevidne det faktum, at hun lærte mig at hækle, da jeg var tre år gammel. Jeg nævner ikke denne tidbit af info i et forsøg på at prale. Jeg simpelthen tilbyde det som proff, at hækling er så nemt og tilgængeligt at selv en tre-årig kan gøre det! Hvis du aldrig har prøvet det før, believe me when I say that you can learn.” – Francine Soukouss
“Women today want to find ways to relax, but have limited time, and crocheting can be a mental health vitamin that provides that feel good place.” – Alyson Bell
“It makes sense that people who crochet and knit enjoy doing so as a group, because their hobby so often involves giving.” – David Sanders
And I shared a couple saucy crochet quotes.
Her er hvad jeg var op til et år siden:
I made my treble crochet scarf which I’ve featured a few more times like her og her.
And I won Tammy Hildebrand’s Easy Bead as You Go from Ambassador Crochet and also won a knitting book from Cute Crochet!
What do you think will be happening one year from now in crochet?
