Are You Dolce and Gabbana or The Sak Crochet?

Last week I wrote about the crochet handbags, shoes and accessories from the brand The Sak. Some of the items that they make reminded me of the Dolce & Gabbana crochet items that I’ve featured here on the blog in the post. I thought I’d do a roundup comparing some of the D&G crochet to some of The Sak crochet and then ask you … which brand do you feel like is more your style?

The Price

Would it change your answer at all if I told you that the average Dolce and Gabbana handbag costs more than $1500 whereas The Sak is priced under $100 per bag? The difference in shoe prices is comparable.

Okay so I am a D&G girl on a SAK budget! thank goodness I can crochet and make either!!! I had the "original" SAK bag for years. You know the one n the add draped down the woman's back.

I have this love-hate relationship with the granny square... The phrase conjures in my mind, visuals from my childhood in the 70s with burnt orange and avocado green... but as a designer and crafter, I can appreciate the simplicity of execution but the complexity and broadness of the possibilities! Personal opinion: Handbags and shoes ALWAYS fit... I prefer the simple, classic look of The Sak.

I've heard a lot of people say that about the granny square. I was born in 1980 myself so I don't actually have those references from my own childhood and as a result the granny square in that sort of style feels very retro-cool to me. :)

I like the Sak bags. Price aside I think they have cleaner lines and just have a more polished look. It happens sometimes when high designers imitate craft. They just can't leave well enough alone, they have to make it look a little tacky so everyone will know it is "handmade". I once had a weaver friend who did some work for a fashion designer, they wanted her to make mistakes on purpose. She didn't like that at all.

Except the granny squares bags (which I don't like) I like the Sak's stuff more that the D&G. With the price difference it is a no-brainer even if I didn't like it more. :)

@kmckown58 So interesting since that granny square bag has been one of the most popular things I've posted on this site in the past. I love how we all have our own styles.
