Have you always secretly (or not so secretly) wanted to donate crochet to a public art project? Yarnbombing Los Angeles needs your help so now is your chance!

The Project

Yarnbombing Los Angeles, a diverse group of guerilla knitters and crocheters that has worked together for more than two years, has been invited to cover the entire exterior facade of the Craft and Folk Art Museum in granny squares. It will take thousands of granny squares to cover the building so they need help and asking for your donations.

This museum is a great space that celebrates folk art, including crochet and knitting, through many different exhibitions. Yarnbombing Los Angeles holds a monthly stitch ‘n bitch here at this location. I’m not sure at this stage what the exhibition will be when the yarnbomb art goes up on the building’s facade but I’m sure it’ll be one worth checking out.

What You Can Send

In order to create the vision of loveliness that they have in mind for this project they are calling for 5″ x 5″ single color crochet granny squares, which you are allowed to make in any of four colors:

  • Bright Orange
  • Bright Green
  • Cyan
  • White
Note that each granny square should be only one color and the color must be one of the four colors mentioned above.
The folks running the project also add, “In the package, please include your name, location, and favorite type of stitch, and we will credit you in all press mentions of the work.”
Note that it will help them a lot to know in advance how many people are interested in participating. Just drop them a line yarnbombing18(at)gmail(dot)com letting them know that you want to contribute.

Where to Send It

Send your donation to:

Yarnbombing Los Angeles
18th Street Arts Center
1653 18th Street #5
Santa Monica, CA 90404

Deadline

All of the crochet granny squares must be received by March 1, 2013. That gives you a little bit of time to work on granny squares to send along. I know I always enjoy making some squares here and there in between projects and I definitely have some of those colors in my yarn stash so I’m going to see if I can put together a package to participate in this project.
