The Hyperbolic Crochet Reef project launched by the Wertheim Sisters is arguably the most successful crochet art project ever made. And I spotted a rumor that Margaret Wertheim might write a book about the project!

The Hyperbolic Crochet Reef

As you likely know, the project uses hyperbolic crochet to create yarn reef displays that are used to raise awareness about environmental issues around the world. Some of the reasons it is so cool include:

  • Hyperbolic crochet uses math principles to create organic-looking figures
  • The final product spreads the word about important “green” issues
  • The reefs are usually created through a community effort with crochet by many contributors
  • The original project has spawned many satellite projects over time; it’s a constantly evolving project
  • It has proven to be a great way to encourage girls/ women to explore science and math

Is Margaret Wertheim Writing a Book?

Margaret Wertheim, one half of the smart sister team that launched the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project was recently interviewed by Cosmos Magazine about her new book, which is called Physics on the Fringe. The final interview question was “what will you do next” and here’s what Wertheim answered:

“The next book that I will write will probably be about my Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project. Tens of thousands of women all over the world have come to our workshops at these crocheted reefs projects and we talk about how global warming and ocean acidification are devastating to coral reefs and marine environments. And we talk about geometry, because coral organisms with those frilly crenulated structures are biological manifestations of hyperbolic geometry. It’s been a very, very powerful way to engage women with science.”

I woudl absolutely love to see a book about this project. I think it would be smart and interesting. It would be a great addition to the library of crochet-related books out there that aren’t just straightforward pattern books. And I would guess that it would include lots of personal stories about the women involved in the project over time; as you know from my book I love personal stories like that!

If Margaret Wertheim writes a book about The Hyperbolic Crochet Reef project would you be likely to read it?

There is another book out on a similar topic, Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes.  I always think it seems cool, but I haven't bought it yet.  (Perhaps because I'm not as interested in making hyperbolic projects?)  If Wertheim's book raised money for an environmental charity, I would definitely buy it though (even if I never get around to reading it).

I would love to read this book if it comes out! I love how this project combines so mmany areas I am interested in--math, science, art, environmentalism, crochet.
