Today’s crochet quote actually comes from a knitter, Gail of StraightJacketKnitting who said this quote in a really brave interview that she did discussing her OCD, Tourette’s and ADHD for Compassionate Knitter’s Knitting and Health Interview Series. She said:

If you were to ask me for the best way to treat any illness, I would answer without hesitation, “Yarn.”

In addition to today’s quote, this post is a shout out to all of my readers to let you know that I’m collecting stories about the role that crochet has played in improving  your mental / physical health. I have mentioned this issue several times and have received several comments indicating that you guys have benefitted in numerous ways from crochet. Now I’m here to make the semi-official announcement: I’m writing a book about this and I want your stories!

In the book I am looking at all of the ways that crochet can be used to improve both mental and physical health conditions. I am looking for stories related to how crochet has helped you or someone you know with things like depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, autism, arthritis, fibromyalgia, stress-related heart conditions, insomnia … and whatever else it’s been a benefit for. I am seeking stories from people who have been diagnosed with these conditions as well as people who haven’t but who have experienced some symptoms of them and have used crochet to mitigate those symptoms.

If you have a story, I want to hear it. I am flexible about how the exchange of this story takes place. We can do an email exchange, chat online or talk via phone (or meet up for coffee if you’re in the Bay Area!) You can remain anonymous or share your story openly. If you are at all interested in participating, please shoot me an email to kathryn.vercillo (at) gmail with the subject line Crochet for Health.

And please feel free to share this story request widely via RT, forwarding my contact information to others you may know who have a story to tell, etc. Much appreciated! I am so greatly looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say!!
