Crochet Quotes: Gail Callahan

I don’t dye my own yarn but it’s something that I’m interested in trying it eventually. Because of this, I’ve been reading some books on yarn dyeing including Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece: Custom-Color Your Favorite Fibers with Dip-Dyeing, Hand-Painting, Tie-Dyeing, and Other Creative Techniques by Gail Callahan. I enjoyed this quote from the book, which is about the animal fibers that make up great yarn:

“The only way to get any of these animal fibers is by hand. The fibers are all sheared, combed, or plucked from the animals by other animals – humans! This is what I love most about working with fibers. The human touch has to be present to achieve all of the possibilities. No machine has been designed to hold and shear an animal.”

Do you dye your own yarn? What has your experience with that been?
